Villeret

Villeret is a municipality in the Jura bernois administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. It is located in the French-speaking Bernese Jura (Jura Bernois).

Geography

Villeret has an area of 16.3 km2 (6.3 sq mi). Of this area, 43.9% is used for agricultural purposes, while 51.5% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 3.7% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (0.9%) is non-productive (rivers or glaciers).[3]

Demographics

Villeret has a population (as of 31 December 2010) of 887.[1] As of 2007, 9.3% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has grown at a rate of 3.1%. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks French (83.1%), with German being second most common (11.3%) and Albanian being third ( 2.4%).

In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 30.1% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS (26.5%), the FDP (18.9%) and the Green Party (13.3%).

The age distribution of the population (as of 2000) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 23% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 60% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 17%. In Villeret about 68.4% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule).

Villeret has an unemployment rate of 1.63%. As of 2005, there were 37 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 13 businesses involved in this sector. 372 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 13 businesses in this sector. 94 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 29 businesses in this sector.[3]
